Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Flatbed Scanner: This scanner is so good that I sold my Nikon CoolScan Super 9000ED & Microtek ArtixScan 120tf plus a Microtek ArtixScan 1800f. One of the main troubles was SilverFast with 6x6 scanning, never worked right & they did not seem to know what to do. With the V700 I'm using their software and it works very well. I can do more tweaking in Aperture. Finally I have a scanner with little or no trouble.
The user's guide is sometimes hard to find what you want to know, It could use a better table contents. Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Flatbed Scanner: It took me a little longer to set the scanner up than it should have, but once I started using it, it was very easy and fast. It would have been nice to have more instructions on how to place negatives in the trays and tips on placement of prints to have them scan right-side-up. With a little trial and error, I figured it out. The quality of the scans is fantastic. Although it only accommodates up to 8 1/2 x 11' prints, I was able to scan larger prints and piece them together in Photoshop easily. Black and white prints were scanned accurately, it only seemed to have trouble with a charcoal drawing on brown paper - the scan looked more yellow than brown.
The other color photo prints were scanned accurately. The first project for which I used this scanner was to scan in old family photos, albums, etc. A few of the photos were antiques and could not be removed from their frames. I was able to scan through the glass and still get a great image. Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Flatbed Scanner: The scanner is fantastic.
I had read some complaints about it being 'slow' to scan, but I will disagree because the image quality is greater than 'entry' scanners (honestly, I was surprised how fast it was the first time I used it). The Epson software is good and the SilverFast software that comes with it excellent. The scanner itself is very solid and well built. I would recommend this scanner to anyone wanting high quality images and it is great for scanning film (which is what I primarily use it for). Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Flatbed Scanner: I like it. High quality scans.
Don't expect high speed scans at high resolutions, but that goes with the territory. Nice to be able to scan multiple slides without having to change originals every time.
Also like capability of medium and large format negs/slides, as I have many to scan. This is a replacement for an HP 7400 and HP Photosmart scanner.
Note: I am using it with Vista 64 bit OS and the Epson software works fine. I have not tried Silverfast software as I use Photoshop. One downside is that max scan of 8.5x11, it will not scan legal documents. Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Flatbed Scanner: I purchased the V700 to scan 20+ years of pre-digital pictures into my iPhoto library and so far have scanned 7 rolls.
The quality of the scans is excellent. The software is adequate but a bit clunky and non-intuitive, especially for those used to the Mac OS. The important thing is the software does allow separation of multiple pictures into separate files after loading film into included holders.
The workflow to save to sequentially numbered files in a designated folder then allows easy dropping into iPhoto but the process could certainly be easier with better software. Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Flatbed Scanner: I have used this scanner for two weeks. I use it primarily for 120 and 35mm negatives and transparencies. I previously used a dedicated 35mm scanner but wanted to scan my medium format work. The scanner produces outstanding work and is easy to use.
I did upgrade the Silverfast software to Ai - it's what I used before. While both the software used and technical ability of the user will have a great bearing on the results one receives - this scanner is an outstanding performer and good value. Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Flatbed Scanner: Bought it for use with a vista 64 computer. Drivers loaded up fine (using usb connection) Scanner recognized by Epson software as well as Google Picassa scan software. Supplied Adobe photoshop 6.0 runs on vista 64 computer, but it does not 'see' the scanner. SilverFast SE software supplied IS NOT WRITTEN FOR 64 bit OS.
This is disappointing. When advertised that it is Vista compatible, ALL the software should be as well. Color scans are looking good. Operation is easy and basic software is intuitive (important since most of documentation is of disk).
Still getting the hang of B&W negative scans. Negative holders allow slight curve of negative film. Would like to see option of glass holders. I'm also looking for spare holders as I could be setting up the next scan while waiting for previous scan to complete.
Overall, I'm happy with the purchase so far. Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Flatbed Scanner: After much research on options, I went with the Epson V700 and am happy I did.
It's an excellent full-function scanner, easy to set up, easy to use. I have a boatload of old slides and negatives in my to-be-scanned pile, but those I used on test runs came out beautifully. Pros: easy set-up, clear instructions, will have practical uses for it when all my slide and 35 mm negative scans are done. Cons: bigger and bulkier than I thought it would be - perhaps not a good option for the space-challenged.
Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Flatbed Scanner: This scanner is a replacement for an older Epson scanner I was using for old 35mm slides and photos. The biggest improvement is with the DMax 4.0; it created a much wider range of colors and levels from the older slides that my first scanner couldn't. This creates more details in the shadows and bright spots. The greater range (and higher resolution) also allow for more post-scan image adjustments, which a lot of the older slides really need. The set up was simple (I use it with Photoshop) and the interface makes capturing 12 slides at a time very quick.
Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Flatbed Scanner: Don't believe the claim that this product is fully compatible with Windows Vista, because it is not. The basic scanning software from Epson works just fine, but SilverFast SE does not even start.
It is crashing instantly. The SilverFast customer service is non-existent. There is no toll free number, and nobody answers the number in Florida, nor returns the voice messages. The scanner is good though, so if you are ready to process your image in some other software (like Photoshop), you'll be fine. Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Flatbed Scanner: I've had my scanner about 2 weeks and I'm very pleased with my purchase.
So far I've scanned about 1000 medium-format negatives with satisfactory results. Initial setup was very easy, software installation and all that. At the moment, I'm just doing quick-and-dirty proof scans of about 14,000 negatives, so I'm not being too critical of the quality just yet.
I have experienced some moments of frustration with color shifts, scanning two nearly identical side-by-side negatives, one is warm and natural, the other is nasty and cyan. Balancing the color with the color-wheel tool is pretty tricky, often resulting in shifting the color too far in the other direction. The film I'm scanning, Fuji Pro 400, is not listed as an option in the SilverFast software, maybe that's the issue.
I have no doubt that I will get the hang of the software, but I can't say that it's something that one can learn without investing some time and effort. I'm not sure how tech support is for the product, I guess I'll find out when my needs become more critical. Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Flatbed Scanner: The V700 Photo delivers outstanding results on my slides and transparencies.
I've scanned hundreds of 100-year old black-and-white large format (4' x 5') negatives. Although the originals are in poor condition and often curved, the results are superb. You can tell the large dynamic range (Dmax) really pays off in this application. I've also scanned hundreds of prints and a several dozen 35mm color slides with great results. It scans quickly and best of all the lamp warms up with minimal delay.
It's easy to be very productive with the V700. The 35mm slides turn out very well too, the quality is almost equal to my special-purpose Pacific Image PowerSlide 3650 carousel scanner. If you have a lot of slides then a carousel is the way to go. The provided scanning software is powerful and trouble-free. It's so nice to have it automatically frame and scan several prints in one pass, reliably and accurately.
It divides the user interface into 'home' and 'professional' users according to how much it automates the settings. The 'home' programming has a great number of options but it's easy to get excellent results with the defaults and its options were all I ever needed.
The 'professional' interface gives many more settings that look useful. My only complaint is they buried the target folder name and base filename under a few extra clicks. The noise reduction (digital ICE) was useful on some photos but too overpowering on others, even at mild settings.
I prefer to do my touch-up in Photoshop CS3 and LightRoom anyway. I did not install the extra software (Elements and SilverFast). Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Flatbed Scanner: Comes with negative stages for 35mm,medium format, and 4x5 films. Stage for up to 5x7 format available from internet source (I have acquired same). Up to 8x10 for scanning prints and (with anti-newton glass, obtainable elsewhere) negatives.
35mm stage takes 24 negatives at a time, thus far more efficient than, say, Nikon coolscan. Versatile, therefore, because it meets all my various needs. Fast because I can work in 24 frame batches. Easy to follow instructions. Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Flatbed Scanner: Installing the scanner is eazy. Using the scanner is simple and fast.I use Epson scanners at work as part of teaching technicians to work on photo equipment, but I purchased this scanner for my personal work.
I am using the scanner to scan 2 1/4 and 4x5 slides and negs. I have also used the scaner to duplicate decals for model builders. The scanns are clear and very detailed. The scanner cost a little more than most, but you get what you pay for and then some with this scanner. Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Flatbed Scanner: I have had a V700 for about two months and love it. I have scanned numerous photos, as well as artwork, slides and transparencies. All have scanned beautifully. The quality is superb.
My scanned images are printed on my Epson Stylus Photo R1800 printer and they have all come out better than the originals, even with little or no editing or enhancement. The Epson software is easy to use and works excellently. I highly recommend the V700 if you are looking to purchase a good quality scanner. Problems Encountered: None whatsoever! Previous Equivalent Items Owned: None Items I Recommend: Epson Stylus Photo R1800 Printer.
